Barcelona Map Room

I was lived in Barcelona for nearly a year while doing my Masters. To interact with the new city, I made 'Map' drawings. The 'maps' were of the older Barrio Gotico area of Barcelona; other map drawings were made later on in England.

The information that follows can also be found in the Map Room Gallery:

Grids and Mapping seem to go hand in hand with each other and both have been sources of inspiration in my studio work.

My favourite room in the Old British Library was the Map Room.

The paintings in my ‘Map Room’ are temporal maps inspired by a combination of physical travel and mental journeying.

Just living requires engagement in a complex mental process of the construction of personal thematic maps. As circumstances change each map has to be drawn and re-drawn according to changing perceptions and circumstances.

These Mental maps exist in the border areas of conscious and subconscious and help us to negotiate and make sense of our world. It is in these border areas or Interstices that I find most inspiration and where the Map Room paintings and drawings were conceived.
