Gridworks - Parcels

Grids structures have fascinated me for a long time.

A Grid structure acts as physical presence in my paintings. A grid structure is also a mental construct; it is also a structure that acts as both container and contained

For the Gridwork paintings, the grid structure was a mapping of the underlying warp and weft of the canvas. I had a hightened sense of the structure because of my previous training in creative textiles. I have experience in weaving.

Because I was interested in grids I wrote my first degree thesis referencing Rosalind Krauss’s Essay ‘Grid’ in The Originality of the Avant-Garde and Other Modernist Myths. Pub. Mitt Press. 1988 Edition. The research I did for the Thesis fed into my artwork and visa versa.

Notes written on the studio wall about grids when I made the Parcel works included the words: contained, enclosed, excluded and many more, and I saw that they applied to parcels. The act of wrapping was for me the same as isolating something within a sector of a grid. I equated materials used for parcel wrapping as lines of the grid.

Making parcels as artworks led to some of what I have termed Intermications.
