Wind Series (2000)

The Wind paintings were made by the wind with interventions by me.  Transferring wind energy through a device to draw a mark, I mused on whether the image was captured from the wind or merely the trace of its location.

The capture device was a crude sail with an attachment to hold marker pens. I worked on the paintings in the studio in-between the wind making its markings.

I recalled the prayer flags fluttering in the wind in Nepal as prayer offerings. I thought of this process as being like prayer flags in reverse; replies given back. Purely a whimsical notion, as I lean far more to a scientific answer!

Shown here is a representative selection of wind drawings, paintings, and the devices used to make them. It is not definitive, there were others. One of my intermications was with prayer-like flags in Cornwall.
