Gravity

I learned to use an oxyacetylene torch. The the first thing I used it for was to make a weighted metal frame for as part of an experiment in observation and drawing.

The frame was suspended high up so it had room to drop down. I used fishing line to suspend the frame to an attachment on the ceiling. The fishing line had counter-balanced weights that dictated the frames rate of decent; different weights allowed it to fall at different speeds.

Sometimes the frame would fall slowly, sometimes quickly, sometimes jerkily, sometimes very fast. Whatever the rate of descent I had to be ready to draw was happening.

The drawings and other artwork I made using the Kafka's Metamorphosis story as a starting point, led to the frame experiment. In turn I became interested in the dynamic of surface division and subsequently to grids and mapping.
