Painting Method

How I apply paint and how the paint behaves is as important to the painting as my other sources of inspiration.  Paintings can start with the idea of a landscape or an abstract concept.  Paintings can also start from my curiosity about what will happen if I allow the materials to lead me; mostly my paintings are combination of both approaches.

Curiosity about tools and materials has led me to the use of decorator’s rollers. In the process of experimentation with rollers I have collaborated with Embossing Specialist Carl Ingalls of www.embossingtechnologies.com in the United States to create a bespoke roller that gave me the repetition I wanted on the paintings of the Interstice Series.

For a different tool I made a simple sail device to catch the wind. On the sail device was an attachment from which pens, brushes and less orthodox implements were fixed, so the energy and direction of the wind could be captured and transferred through the drawn mark onto paper and canvas.

In another project I modified a remote control model Ferrari with construction Meccano so that pens etc could trace the movement of the car, allowing ‘remote’ drawings to be made. Building on this project I've since modified the construction that fits on the car.

New work made using a combination of remote drawing and hands on painting is the Tractus and Tractus Daydreaming Series. I am currently working on other work in the Tractus series. Beyond the current series I am contemplating a development idea for another remote drawing technique.
