About Parcels & Bundles - Artifacts
An interest in grid forms led to the creation of the Parcel paintings and the Parcel and Bundle artifact/sculptures. In these works, the grid serves as both a physical presence and a conceptual framework, symbolizing ideas of containment and structure. This concept was influenced by my background as a weaver and textile artist, where I was familiar with the woven structure of canvases. Rosalind Krauss's essay "Grid" in her book "The Originality of the Avant-Garde and Other Modernist Myths" also played a significant role in shaping my thoughts.
I started thinking about terms like containment, enclosure, and exclusion, which relate to wrapping parcels. Wrapping a parcel felt similar to isolating an element within a grid sector, with the wrapping materials representing the grid lines.
The parcels' contents symbolize the interior of a grid sector, while everything outside represents exclusion. This idea of mutual exclusion applied to multiple parcels suggests interconnected yet separate entities.
The bundles and individual parcel/encaustic works were created around the same time as the Destination Unknown and other Grid paintings, all are interconnected. For the Exclusion Zone paintings, I had to lay the canvas horizontally while working on them, which eventually led to the Mutual Exclusion Zone Installation.
As the parcels evolved, new avenues of exploration opened up, leading me to various new inquiries.
