Subliminal Spaces
Forays into rough, overlooked spaces at the edge of my county town revealed a mix of roughlands and enclosed sites—places overlooked rather than abandoned, falling through the cracks and becoming something different, something other. Recording this activity was not always through drawing or painting, but through observation itself, which became central to the postcards. Years earlier, I had photographed buildings in the more central areas, by the time my attention turned to the edges, some of those buildings had burnt down or been demolished drawing my attention to how fast change can happen. Tyres, sofas, refuse sacks, fences, and signs ofteen accumulate in subliminal spaces, quietly showing the tension between rules and what lies beyond them. During the time of my explorations I came across the book, Edgelands by Paul Farley and Michael Symmons Roberts, which resonated with what I was seeing.
