Bespoke Interstice Paint-Roller
What would occur if I simultaneously created 13 identical paintings, or as closely as possible?
Each stroke of paint applied to one canvas would be promptly replicated on all others, yet variations would persist due to the inherent unpredictability of my techniques.
Furthermore, what if there were no defined orientation? By rotating the paintings 90 degrees with each stroke, all four directions could become "up" at different intervals.
Consider the effect of implementing varied timing for rotations to counteract gravity's influence on the paint drips. Envision using a bespoke paint roller, engraved with the word ‘Interstices,’ repeating across the canvas with each stroke—an innovation beyond my previous experience with patterned rollers.
The responses to these inquiries lie within the Interstice paintings.
Yet, more questions arise...
How might the owner/s of the Interstice paintings determine the correct orientation? How frequently should the paintings be rotated? And if multiple Interstice paintings are displayed together, should they rotate simultaneously or independently?
Most of these questions remain unanswered.
The bespoke paint roller employed for the Interstice series was a collaborative creation with Carl Ingalls of www.embossingtechnologies.com in the USA.
