A book titled "My Lady of The Chimney Corner" gifted by my sister sparked my intrigue. The title resonated with the chimney corners of my childhood home, which held personal significance. After my sister's death in 1984, the book was lost but later, unexpectedly, returned to me, evoking memories of the past.
Living, and working in a studio in Barcelona, I became immersed in Gaston Bachelard's ‘The Poetics of Space' and Rainer Maria Rilke's works, particularly their reflections on the significance of corners as havens of immobility and introspection, and they inspired me.
'Corners' were being exhibited when the venue had a fire. Fortunately, they only suffered smoke damage. It took time but I was able to work on their restoration. The irony didn’t escape me while I was restoring them, that they smelled like a chimney from my childhood.
Corners were made with mixed media that included fabric, paper maps, broken mirror, dust, print transfer, and gesso. I had working titles for each one, that included: Dusty Corner, Math Corner, Map Corner, Hairy Corner and so on.
