Context:
I make paint-skins in the studio and on location that can be peeled away, kept and carried from one place to another, where they enter new relationships on a canvas. Their textures are particular to each skin, often unruly in ways I value. They carry histories from and beyond where they were made.
Each skin has its own first history, shaped by the particular place and circumstances of its formation. When I bring skins together in a new painting, their histories become part of a new set of relationships.
Through the shifting relationships between the skins, a new entity arrives, one with agency, authority and history of its own.
