On the way south
Journeys I make sometimes serve as metaphors in my studio for mapping the canvas. South to Calabria paintings emerged from trips I used to make, traveling south from my late husband’s family home in Tuscany to Calabria, Italy, where my sister-in-law had settled. An old book titled South to Calabria by Leslie Gardiner also inspired this series.
Imaginative internal journeys are a significant part of my creative process. I draw from various factual sources—historical, cultural, geological, and scientific—ensuring that each piece has a subtext rooted in these interests. In my paintings, time slows down, space becomes both full and empty, and although the mapping is not the territory, it forms a contemplative space akin to a journey's transition from place to place, creating a different reality.
