Harbour Bridge - Sydney
Shape for the Traces paintings came to me after observing the expansive ancient terrain of Australia from the air. I felt the vast landscape below symbolized the feeling of being lost in an existential space, a sensation not unfamiliar to me.
Envisioning 'maps' for this existential space, and drawing from the aerial view of the land took shape shape while I was on a beach in Newcastle, NSW. The colours of the sea pebbles and rocks on the shore mirrored those of the vast terrain I had flown over.
The pounding sea and with secretions by sea snails, left intricate, crisscrossing trails on the rocks. Each intersecting trail formed a new grid of reference, serving as a visual metaphor for the random mapping of the landscape.
