Morfa evokes a sense of longing for the intangible, somewhere that may or may not exist, residing perhaps only in memory, belonging to a past that lingers in our psyche. For me it is akin to Hiraeth but different. The term Morfa refers to a Welsh low-lying wetland periodically inundated by water, predominantly consisting of sea marsh, salt marsh, and fen, there are areas like this in Eryri and it's this landscape that inspired these paintings, The paintings began alongside the inception of the Talismans project, which is on-going as of late Spring 2024. Exploring the concept of a low-lying wetland intermittently flooded by water, the paintings constituted a reflective journey, navigating depths of emotion and nostalgia across the canvas.
