Corners - Artworks

 About Corners -  Artworks

Corners #1 painting – mixed media on small wooden box panel. Small abstract painting on a shallow wooden box panel. A pale gesso field sits within a white surround, its surface dense and worked rather than flat. Gesso has been used both as ground and as a material, embedding other elements into the surface. Within the field, a graphite drawing on paper is partially embedded and faintly visible, its lines softened and disrupted by layers of gesso. Subtle scratches, rubbed areas, and linear marks cross the surface, creating a sense of abrasion and compression. An irregular inward break along the left edge interrupts the square form, reinforcing the idea of a corner as a site of containment, memory, and quiet introspection

In situ - Corners #2, (15×15× 5cm): small mixed‑media work on a shallow wooden box panel displayed on a wall. Below it, a surface such as a table or shelf holds various objects, including an old-fashioned kettle and wooden boxes. The gessoed panel with embedded fabric fragments and faint handwritten lines from If Not, Winter is shown in relation to its surroundings, emphasising both the small scale of the work and the domestic, layered context in which it is presented.

Corners #5, painting (15×15× 5cm): small mixed‑media work on a shallow wooden box panel with a pale gesso surface. The surface is layered, abraded, and worked, with irregular edges and interruptions suggesting inward corners. Gold paint is embedded within the gesso, integrated into the fabric of the piece, adding subtle highlights that draw attention to overlooked spaces. Scratches, faint lines, and textured layering create depth and contained areas within the pale field.

Corner #5 - Mixed media on gesso box panel - 15x15x5cm

Corners #6, painting (15×15× 5cm): small mixed‑media work on a shallow wooden box panel with a pale gesso surface. The surface is layered, abraded, and worked, with irregular edges and interruptions suggesting inward corners. A fragment of newspaper showing a window is embedded in the gesso and lightly sanded back to reveal layers beneath, suggesting the passage of time. A few scattered words remain visible. The composition evokes derelict buildings the artist played in as a child in the post‑WWII era. Scratches, faint lines, and textured layering create depth and quiet, contained spaces within the pale field.

Corners #7, painting (15×15× 5cm): small mixed‑media work on a shallow wooden box panel with a pale gesso surface. The surface is layered, abraded, and worked, with irregular edges and interruptions suggesting inward corners. A dark painted wall meets a blue painted wall, both with uneven, worked surfaces. The contrast between the two colours, along with scratches, faint lines, and textured layering, emphasises the intersection of the two planes and the depth of the corner space, inspired by spaces the artist explored in childhood.

Corners #8, painting (15×15× 5cm): small mixed‑media work on a shallow wooden box panel with a pale gesso surface. The surface is layered, abraded, and worked, with irregular edges and interruptions suggesting inward corners. Dust and floor‑fluff fragments are embedded in the gesso, emphasising the sense of a neglected or overlooked corner. Scratches, faint lines, and textured layering create depth and quiet, contained spaces within the pale field

Corners #10, painting (15×15× 5cm): small mixed‑media work on a shallow wooden box panel with a pale gesso surface. The surface is layered, abraded, and worked, with irregular edges and interruptions suggesting inward corners. The panel evokes a room‑like corner with walls resembling derelict buildings, with scratches, faint lines, and textured layering suggesting notes, markings, or sequences on the walls. The composition creates depth and a sense of time, echoing patterns of numerical engagement while reflecting layered, worn surfaces within the pale field.

Scratches, faint lines, and textured layering create depth and suggest contained spaces within the pale field.

Corner #14 - Mixed media  on gesso box panel - 15x15x5cm

Corners #15, painting (15×15× 5cm): small mixed‑media work on a shallow wooden box panel with a pale gesso surface. The surface is layered, abraded, and worked, with irregular edges and interruptions suggesting inward corners. A dark painted ceiling, floor, and wall enclose a corner, with one wall a whitish tone and a small area showing a bilious yellow. The uneven, worked surfaces create a sense of an uneasy, dream-like space. Scratches, faint lines, and textured layering add depth and suggest shifting, enclosed areas within the pale field.

Corner #15 - Mixed media  on gesso box panel - 15x15x5cm

Corners #16, painting (15×15× 5cm): small mixed‑media work on a shallow wooden box panel with a pale gesso surface. The surface is layered, abraded, and worked, with irregular edges and interruptions suggesting inward corners. A dark painted wall meets a whiteish ceiling and floor and wall, forming a corner with some white bleeding across into dark wall after it meets the corner. The uneven, worked surfaces create a sense of a space reminiscent of #15 but lighter and more open. Scratches, faint lines, and textured layering add depth and suggest shifting, enclosed areas within the pale field.

Corner #16 - Mixed media  on gesso box panel - 15x15x5cm

Corners #17, painting (15×15× 5cm): small mixed‑media work on a shallow wooden box panel with a pale gesso surface. Black painted curved lines radiate out from the corner, almost spider-like, creating a dark, uneven area. The composition has a playful, slightly dangerous quality, suggesting a “hairy corner” that feels risky, unpredictable, and edgy. Scratches, faint lines, and textured layering add depth and emphasise the dynamic, challenging space within the pale field.

Corner #17 - Mixed media  on gesso box panel - 15x15x5cm

Corners #18, painting (15×15× 5cm): small mixed‑media work on a shallow wooden box panel with a pale gesso surface. Scratches, faint lines, and textured layering add depth and suggest contained spaces within the pale field

Corner #18 - Mixed media  on gesso box panel - 15x15x5cm

Corner #19 - Mixed media  on gesso box panel - 15x15x5cm

Corners #20, painting (15×15× 5cm): small mixed‑media work on a shallow wooden box panel with a pale gesso surface. Two walls form the illusion of a corner, viewed from a slightly different angle than #19, painted blue with patterns layered in contrasting black. A vertical white line marks the corner, depicted rather than strictly realistic, consistent with other works in the series. Scratches, faint lines, and textured layering add depth and suggest contained spaces.

Corner #20 - Mixed media  on gesso box panel - 15x15x5cm

Corners #21, painting (15×15× 5cm): small mixed‑media work on a shallow wooden box panel with a pale gesso surface.
